This was such a long affair. Two years. He was married and lived near a beach with his wife. He had a kid. Since I knew right away that I would be madly in love with him, I determined to have lots of other affairs. And I did. I gave him crabs. He told me he was lying in bed with his wife and he saw one walking across his thigh. He always presented these things to me with horror as if I should be protecting his marriage. It scared me, his anger. I asked him once if his wife fooled around. She better not. He angrily puffed his cigarette. At certain moments like that he looked really conceited. It was all about him. It just didnât occur to me to challenge him about this stuff. His coldness scared me and it kept him separate which kept him hot. My brother sells wine for a living. One Christmas he gave me a case of really good wine, and thatâs what weâd drink for a while when Robert came over. We both smoked cigarettes. I had this gold brocade couch that you had to pull out. I had lots of records. Django Reinhardt. Jazz. Stuff that I thought was cool in college. I only had two boyfriends. Big romantic ones who were mean and really had me. Handsome men. Robertâs wife was French. He was so impressed by that. She obviously knew that he screwed around. There was this painter, Greg. He would call Greg in the morning. In case his wife called or if she had already, the friend would cover his ass. Obviously, his wife had Gregâs number. I liked hanging around with him and I liked having sex. I donât think I had an orgasm even once. I think that I faked it once in a while. I liked his beauty. He wasnât very versatile. I think I wanted to give him a blow job the first night and it wasnât for him. It was weird. And he didnât have a clue about eating pussy. I think it was beauty for him too. He was built very well. He was a short guy with wonderful arms, shoulders, legs, the whole bit. I just always want my lovers to be beautiful and he was. So it really seemed very infantile, fucking sure, but lying around kissing, talking, even showing him my poems in bed. I would bring out a big pile and he would tell me which ones were the good ones. It was very clear cut, and I appreciated that. I didnât really ask what was wrong with the ones he didnât like. He didnât like it if you got too personal. I think he liked metaphor. Which I donât believe in. He was a very wonderful poet, though a little light and cold. He did not write his best ones for her. There was this really bad one in which they went sailing and then went home and had sex.
